Youssef’s Unity Beanie

designed by Youssef

Last year I met Youssef, a 17yr old from Syria who wanted to learn to knit because he had an idea for a hat design. His long journey from the appalling conditions in Damascus started when he was fifteen and ended in the refugee camp in Calais. He had met many volunteers along the way who had shown him great kindness whatever their nationality, background or religion. Youssef wanted to celebrate this by working the symbols of Peace, the Star of David, Crescent and Star and the Cross into his hat and this is his design, Youssef's Unity Beanie. You can download the pattern here for free, we just ask that you consider making a donation to Help Refugees or Phone Credit for Refugees, charities close to Youssef's heart. Charity information links and details on how to make a donation can be found at the end of the pattern.
